Bamidele Olubayode is a lecturer in the Physiology Programme, College of Health Sciences. I research in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism. I have worked extensively on the potentials of medicinal plants on diabetes and haematological indices in animal models. I am currently working on the effects of medicinal plants on ischaemia-reperfusion injury in animals.

Research

I have been conducting studies on the natural products with medicinal and therapeutic importance for the past ten (10) years in haematology, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, stress and diabetes mellitus. My findings have revealed that the medicinal plants under investigations contain anti-oxidant, anti-toxic, antistress and anti-diabetic compounds which may be of help to people of low income earners who may find it difficult to afford orthodox medicine. I am currently exploring some medicinal plants peculiar to West Africa with tremendous therapeutic potential and less toxic effect that can ameliorate stress, diabetes mellitus and haematological disorders. I am also investigating the potential of antimalaria drugs especially artemisinin in lowering fasting blood sugar in laboratory animals. The study emanates from the discovery that artemisinin convert alpha cells of the pancreas to the beta cells that produce insulin which helps to transport glucose into the cells for storage.
