Research
My research pursuit is primarily in Natural Products Chemistry with activities involving chemical extraction of phytochemicals, isolation, identification and characterization of active principles using basic and advanced chemical techniques as well as organic drug formulation.
My research also employed a hydro distillation approach and thin layer Chromatography to identify five monoterpenes from Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus crebra, Eucalyptus deglupta and Eucalyptus torelliana.
We have, through controlled experimentation, demonstrated and authenticated the antioxidant properties of aqueous extracts of eight medicinal and aromatic plants (Bryophyllum pinnatum, Globimetula oreophila, Xylopia aethiopica, Senna alata, Cissampelous owariensis, Carica papaya, Strophanthus hispidus, and Citrus aurantifolia) using the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) models. These studies were carried out in the Drug Formulation Laboratory, School of Basic Pharmacy, West Virginia University, Morgantown, USA.
For the first time, we showed that Globimetula oreophila and Bryophyllum pinnatum extracts possessed cis-dihydro-3,4-bis[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]-2(3H)-furanone, butanedioic acid, glyceric acid, fumaric acid, 3,4-dihydroxy butanoic acid, malic acid, tetrahydroxy butane, 2,3,4trihydroxybutanoic acid, tartaric acid, arabitol, ribofuranose, isocitric acid, inositol, hexo-pyranose and inosose in the CH3OH using GC-MS studies. Through our work on the metabolite profiling of these compounds at the College of Natural Resources, University Idaho, Moscow, USA., we have demonstrated their efficacy in the management of inflammatory and cardiovascular conditions in traditional medicine.
Findings made above, have been presented at scientific fora and the efforts have attracted many peer-reviewed articles from 2008 to date.
I have through supervision, imparted some of these techniques used in Natural Product Chemistry to both my Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. My current Undergraduate and Postgraduate supervisory focus and research is on the extraction, purification, and characterization of bioactive constituents of medicinal plants. In addition, the reactions and bioactivity of synthetic and natural quinones are being studied for their therapeutic uses and in silico studies on some selected plant extracts.
