Research
My research area can be broadly summarized into three major Areas:
Welfare economics: This is important because it provides a framework for policy-makers to make informed decisions about how to improve the overall well-being of people in society. In addition, welfare economics can help to boost economists’ understanding of how different market structures and resource distributions impact economic efficiency and social welfare.
There are many different examples of welfare in economics. In general, welfare can be viewed as the well-being of individuals in society which is the main goal of the government of many nations. This well-being is typically measured in terms of economic indicators such as income, employment, consumption, and wealth. It can also be measured in terms of other factors such as happiness, education, health and social relations. These varying definitions and attributes of welfare help account for the inherent complexity of welfare economics. Application of the knowledge of welfare Economics have helped me to apply economic tools which enabled me to conduct research on redistribution of income at the national and household levels which is the core of my doctoral thesis. It has also enabled me to determine those factors that that responsible for income differential both nationally and at other levels. Through welfare analysis techniques, I have been able to come up with studies which ascertain whether economic growth or redistribution contributes most to poverty reduction in Nigeria and that equitable distribution of income and pro-poor growth is essential for growth to translate into meaningful and rapid poverty reduction.
A recent study I carried out in Bowen University was based on improving the welfare and livelihood of dairy farmers. Proper orientation needs to be carried out through sector policies, organizational structures and support services for dairy farms most especially in the area of healthcare. This will help stimulate dairy development by the dominant informal sector and will encourage small and large-scale dairy production.
Economic Policy: The main goal of macroeconomic policy is to provide a stable economic environment that is conducive to fostering strong and sustainable economic growth, on which the creation of jobs, wealth and improved living standards depend. My Undergraduate and M.Sc theses were both concerned with the evaluation of government programmes based on economic policies which were meant to improve the living conditions of the people. From the findings, I have been able to come up with recommendations that inform policy.
Development Economics: This is the study of how emerging nations become more financially stable. It can be used as a tool for students and economists working to develop policies that can be used in creating domestic and international policy. Development economics is also a subfield of economics that focuses on economic conditions and well-being of people in low and middle-income countries. Development economists will often work in governments, NGOs, think tanks, and academia, and are usually concerned with trying to incorporate and improve evidence-based policies and programs. By focusing on development economics, I had the opportunity of applying the tools of economic development analysis to the problems and challenges facing less-developed countries especially in Africa and to begin to understand why some countries have been able to go through a process of economic and human development whilst others have languished. Through the knowledge of development economics, I carried out studies which were able to reveal that policies targeted at reducing inequality of opportunities among rural population will go a long way in alleviating poverty and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal1.
