Dr H.B Akpan has been a tutor in the field of Anatomy for the past 24 years in which she has taught at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and graduated several undergraduates and postgraduate students. She has also held several administrative positions including Head, Department of Anatomy, Senate Member, Dean, faculty of Basic medical sciences. She has passion for excellence and detailed studies. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Anatomy Programme, College of Health Sciences, Bowen University, Iwo.

Research

Diabetic studies, Neurosciences and Toxicology

My Diabetes studies come with particular interest in unveiling the molecular and structural mechanisms signaling diabetic complications as an attempt to finding the solution to the ravaging menace of diabetes to human health. Here, studies have been carried out using natural extracts from commonly available and affordable medicinal plants as intervention agents in diabetic conditions using animal models. At the neuroscience level, my interest focuses on debilitating conditions occasioned by neuro degenerational diseases whose etiology are more or less difficult to explain but causes identified through macro and micro architectural changes in the nervous tissue. Again, efforts are geared towards contributing the possible ameliorative and by extension the solution to the management of these conditions. Additionally, toxicity has been identified as one of the major underlying factors in disease conditions, so, various research processes in my laboratory are ongoing to examine the roles of various toxins in alterations in macro and microstructure of various tissues in the body and by extension identify possible intervention agents (affordable and available) to combat the complications arising therefrom in line with the Bowen focus.
