Dr. Amole teaches Family Medicine and he is so passionate in inspiring and motivating students to learn and achieve their goals. He is also an Honorary Consultant to the Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Oyo state. His areas of interest are Lifestyle Medicine, Musculoskeletal Injuries, and Rehabilitation of Persons Affected by Leprosy. Research
My research work covered my area of interest which are Lifestyle Medicine, Musculoskeletal Injuries, and Rehabilitation of Persons Affected by Leprosy.
LIFESTYLE MEDICINE
In many developing countries overweight, obesity and obesity-related morbidity are becoming a problem of increasing importance. A lot of studies have been carried out to assess obesity in Nigeria using Body Mass Index. A shortcoming of the BMI is that it does not give information about the total fat or fat distribution in the body, which can also affect health.
There was paucity of studies on assessment of obesity using the waist circumference in Nigeria. I carried out studies assessing abdominal obesity using waist circumference and its association with hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The outcome of the studies revealed that there is a strong association between abdominal obesity and hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
Tape measure was the instrument used to assess the abdominal obesity. This is an inexpensive tool that can be bought by many patients. It does not also require complex calculation. It can be used at home to monitor the waist circumference thereby preventing abdominal obesity and its associated complication.
REHABILITATION OF PATIENTS AFFECTED BY LEPROSY
In year 2014, I was sent to undergo training on reconstructive surgery for Leprosy Affected Persons in India. The training was sponsored by the Damien Foundation, Belgium. After the training, the first and only Reconstructive Centre for Leprosy Affected Persons in South-Western Nigeria was established by Damien Foundation in collaboration with Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, in 2015. This service which was introduced into the care of the Leprosy leprosy-affected persons has led to a great improvement in the rehabilitation and reintegration of the affected person into the community.
I have presented case series of patients whose fear of stigmatization was reduced because they had their deformities corrected. It was also possible to reintegrate some of them back into the community because their deformities have been corrected and people find it difficult to know whether they are Hansen’s disease patients. This aspect of rehabilitation has brought a great transformation to the care of Leprosy Affected Persons in Nigeria. I have published case series on the correction of deformities of the hand, foot, and eye in these patients. I highlighted the method of corrections, pre and postoperative physiotherapy, and the outcome of the correction.
MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES
Bowen University Teaching Hospital is located along Ogbomoso-Ilorin Road. The road is notorious for road traffic injuries because of the high number of heavy-duty vehicles and commercial motorcycles plowing the road. In some of my publications, I highlighted the pattern of musculoskeletal injuries seen at the hospital, the management, the outcome, and how they can be prevented. Various methods of management that can be used in resource-limited countries like ours were also highlighted.
