- A Biographical Survey of Selected Works of Mabel Segun
This article traces the presentation of Mabel Segun’s works and her life as a writer with specific reference to the reflection of her personality in her works. This study engages how her background has served as an inspiration for her writing a general overview of her works in terms of thematic concerns, styles, techniques and language.
This study locates the status and place of Mabel Segun in African Literature, particularly Nigerian Literature. Thus, the work is on the premises that it is impossible to talk about Nigerian literature without making reference to the works of this female literary icon. - Intra-religious Terrorism in Elnathan John’s Born on a Tuesday
The origin of violence, kidnap and suicide bombing, as expressions of Islamic revolution from a religious sect in Nigeria, can be traced to the northern part of Nigeria in 2011. This revolution against the government ̶ terrorism ̶ has gradually spread to other parts of the country, led to loss of lives and defined Nigeria as an unsafe state among the nations of the world. This study discussed the literary portrayal of this societal menace and explains how these religious extremists from the northern part of Nigeria adopt violence in their operations against the government, politicians and innocent citizens, which include those from other sects of Islam. The study employed the Freudian Psychoanalysis in analysing the selected text. This is to explain the reason how deprived and brainwashed youths in northern Nigeria revolt against their fellow Islamists and the government, in order to project their sect’s ideology. Hence, Elnathan John’s Born on Tuesday, was aptly selected to convey this message through the text. The study holds that against some opinions, not all northerners or Islamists perpetrate or encourage religious and political violence (terrorism) but a sect, which is considered as promoter of strange ideologies that are inimical to Islam’s belief. - Teaching Postmillennial African Novels: In this paper, I examine how probing certain African myths can be instrumental in teaching some African narratives. Specifically, I study myths and folktales as potent tools in explaining certain phenomena in teaching Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu’s Zara the Windseeker. Myths and folktales, as Zara the Windseeker makes evident, continue to be viable tools for decoding aspects of the African experience. My pedagogy involves scrutinizing the literary qualities of myths and how these get transposed into literary texts like the one under examination.
