The actualisation of this historical and laudable decision of Senate in giving birth to the programme finally happened at the beginning of the 2018/2019 Academic Session after a Resource Verification Visit by Experts of the National University Commission (NUC).
The B.MLS degree is a scientifically based, principally medically focussed bachelor’s degree programme that prepares students for entry into the Medical Laboratory Science profession and enables them for further academic and professional training both at home and abroad.
The Medical Laboratory Science profession is one of the most remarkable, prestigious, exciting, challenging, dynamic and noble professions of our time. The import of Medical Laboratory Scientists as Clinical Laboratorians is concisely and explicitly ascertained in 1999 by Darlene Berger, Editor, Medical Laboratory Observer: “The history of the laboratory is the story of medicine’s evolution from empirical to experimental techniques and proves that the Clinical Laboratory is the true source of medical authority”. In addition, research has shown that over 70% of all critical decisions in medical practice, e.g. admission, discharge and therapy are based on laboratory generated results: emphasising the incontestably highly significant role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in quality, purposeful and excellent healthcare delivery. According to Beastall (2013), there is no other medical specialty that intervenes in such a large magnitude of medical procedures. Medical Laboratory Scientists are therefore, indeed, at the centre and fulcrum of patient care. A foremost Nigerian Medical Practitioner and Educationist, Emeritus Professor E. O. Elebute (1970) had this to say: “A doctor who omits or is not provided with facilities for laboratory investigations will frequently fail to arrive at the correct diagnosis. He will therefore apply the wrong treatment or he will apply the combination of alternative treatments. In the former instance, he will fail to alleviate the suffering of his patients while in the latter, he becomes a mere purveyor of poly-pharmacy”.
Given that Medical Laboratory Scientists have been provided with an in depth, broad based education and training in fundamental scientific knowledge and its applications, they are well equipped to meeting the changing needs of careers in the equally continuously changing world relating not only to Hospital Laboratories and Clinics but also Forensic Laboratories, Veterinary Clinics and Laboratories, Industrial Research Laboratories, Molecular Biotechnology Laboratories, Research Institutes, Pharmaceutical Industries, Utility Departments and Corporations such as Water Corporation and Sewage Disposal Systems, Food, Canning and Soft Drinks Industries (where they serve in Quality Control) as well as the Health and Safety Industry among others.
In addition to the versatility in the employment prospects of the B.MLS graduates, the science, training and practice characteristic of these enigmatic professionals are erotically in bed with entrepreneurship. Consequently, B.MLS graduates have been equipped not only for gaining employment but also to developing as entrepreneurs, creating jobs for others as they strive to find solutions to the myriads of problems confronting humanity in various frontiers.
The curriculum for the five (5) year B.MLS degree programme is highly robust in terms of content and flexible with respect to its evolutionary capacity to meeting the future challenges in the rapidly changing nature of the economic world order. The incredible and extraordinary nature of the tripartite enterprise which ensures that students undergo a rigorous academic and professional education and training in Medical Laboratory Science as prescribed by The National University Commission and The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and, intensely, faithfully and religiously executed by the authorities of Bowen University where Godliness synergises with Excellence and a drug free environment that is saturated with entrepreneurship inclination factors assures of producing Medical Laboratory Scientists unequalled in character, learning, professional and relational abilities as well as great transferable skills. Certainly, Bowen University stands tall in preparing our young people for an assured future. Therefore we invite you to come and join us as students and parents.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”GOVERNMENT SOCIAL ACTIVITIES” tab_id=”government-social-activities-bmls”][vc_column_text]The first cohort of students on the B.MLS degree programme governed by Bowen University’s Students’ Affairs Section Guidelines has formed a Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association which would progressively evolve as Bowen University Branch of the Nigerian Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association (NIMELSSA). Our students are being encouraged to develop and hewn their leadership skills under these as well as other platforms as a way of preparing them for future national and international professional and political leadership responsibilities. From time to time and operating within the Bowen University Guidelines, the Students’ Association would be organising and participating in various academic, professional and social activities both within and outside The University. During the First Semester, the students took part in The University wide as well Departmental Orientation activities one of which took them to the Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho. These would be annual regular activities at the beginning of each Session to welcome the new entrants. The students have also decided to be having an Annual Medical Laboratory Students’ Week which would feature various programme of activities aimed at enabling them develop and impact the society both now and the future.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”ENTRY REQUIREMENTS” tab_id=”entry-requirements-bmls”][vc_column_text]Prospective applicants for the B.MLS degree programme are expected to have passed the following subjects at a minimum credit level: Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics Physics and any other subject in not more than two attempts at NECO, WASCE and/or GCE Ordinary Level as well as acceptable scores at UTME and Post UTME. Direct entry candidates are expected to have a minimum of 3 C passes at Advanced Level in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and/or Physics in addition to the Ordinary Level requirements. My name is Oduola Abiola. I have the singular honour of being asked by the Management of Bowen University to be the Founding Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and start its flagship programme: B.MLS Programme.
I am highly delighted and indeed, greatly honoured and exceedingly privileged to welcome you to the home page of one of the newest educational and professional programmes in Bowen University: the BMLS Programme. The last few decades have witnessed a sustained surge in the profile of Medical Laboratory Science and consequently Medical Laboratory Scientists globally. The transformation has been due in part to the nature, continuous revision of the mode of academic and professional education, training and practice: these have taken advantage of the phenomenal technological advancement of the closing years of the last millennium to date and will continue to do so. The trio of Bowen University Senate, Management and Governing Council’s realisation of the importance of Medical Laboratory Science in modern healthcare delivery and the global economy in general has led to the establishment of the programme at the beginning of the 2018/2019 Session. The structure of the programme is such that the first two years are for intense, in depth study of the Basic Sciences while the remaining three years are for the Clinical Laboratory subjects, practice and experience. The first is held in the main Campus at Iwo while the latter duo hold at the Bowen University Teaching Hospital in Ogbomosho. On both sites, The University has made significant investment in state-of-the-art equipment for both the Teaching and Service Labs to ensure that our students have a most rewarding and very highly profitable learning experience. In addition, our academic, professional and technical staff are people of adequate national and international exposures who are indeed of world class and know their onions. You are heartily invited to dialogue with us on how we can be a part of your career choice and attainment. It is our hope that your curiosity about Medical Laboratory Science at Bowen will be met but, please feel free to contact me should you require further information.
