Research
Having cared for thousands of adults and children with infectious diseases like Malaria in Nigeria and seeing a number of them die or suffer life-long complications from these preventable and treatable conditions, I have been constantly thinking of research-driven solutions to the problems. I also strongly believe that there is an urgent need to train African researchers in providing solutions to the unacceptably high burden of communicable diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa. My desire to make a positive impact in the fight against infectious diseases of poverty through clinical trials and vaccine development is the basis of my application for this fellowship.
I have keen interest in clinical research and my life time dream is to be a world-class African research expert. My formative experience in medical school coupled with my family medicine residency training and practice has already laid, a solid foundation in understanding the scientific basis of infectious diseases and the care of patients, thereby making me an excellent candidate for the fellowship. Seeking to develop my skills further, I have attended many research-oriented workshops and training locally and nationally .I have also been privileged to be mentored by some local researchers and an international mentor; Prof. Tina M. Slusher. I was fortunate to be part of international research trials such as the Clinical Randomisation of an Antifibrinolytic in Significant Head injury (CRASH-3 Trial) and the Haemorrhage Alleviation with Tranexamic Acid – Intestinal System (HALT-IT).My main duties in the trials were to recruit eligible subjects, take informed consent, administer interventions in a double-blind manner, and collate study data. The experience allowed me to gain hands-on and further ignited my passion for clinical trials. I have since then been constantly longing for opportunities to develop myself further in clinical research skills and clinical research leadership experience.
My current research interest is in malaria especially malaria drugs and vaccine development. I was privileged to be awarded the prestigious American Academy of Pediatrics ICATCH Grant to execute a pilot project in Nigeria on malaria prevention in infants through the implementation of Intermittent Preventive Treatment with Sulphafoxine-Pyrimethamine (SP-IPTi) in the 2019 -2022 cycle of the grant. I sought the efficacy of Sulphafoxine-Pyrimethamine (SP) in preventing malaria incidence in infants but I discovered that the drug had no benefit in IPTi. I attributed this to the declining efficacy of SP, due to increasing drug resistance. The abstract of this cluster-randomized controlled trial won the American Pediatric Association 2022 Global Health Research Award and it was presented at the2022 Pediatric Association Society Conference in Denver, USA. The manuscript was recently published by the Tropical Journal of Pediatrics. I am highly committed to pursuing research-driving innovations and solutions to infectious diseases like malaria. I am also interested in vaccine development and the development of anti-snake venom.
Following the completion of the SP-IPTi trial, I am currently interested in understanding the level of antimalarial drug resistance in Nigeria and the protective efficacy of newer antimalarial drugs. This would help to guide policymakers in making evidence-based recommendations on the choice of antimalarial drugs for malaria chemoprevention and treatment of malaria in both children and adults especially vulnerable individuals such as pregnant women, infants, and sickle cell patients. I am also keenly interested in malaria vaccine development. It is sad to note that Nigerians are yet to benefit from malaria vaccine trials and vaccine administration since the launching of the RTS, S/AS01 vaccine by the World Health Organization on October 6, 2021. Nigerian researchers are urgently needed in vaccine development.
