Research
To date, my research focuses on Industrial Relations and Gender Studies.
One of the issues my research focus identifies is that Discrimination in the workplace generally occurs when an employee is intentionally treated differently because of his or her race, color, religion, national origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation or age by the employer or co-employees during the phases of hiring, discipline, performance appraisal or termination of appointment. The paucity of female employees in leadership positions is very glaring at both the international and national levels. When compared to their proportion in the labor force. Arguments proffered to explain this trend range from lack of interest on women’s part to incompetence. This pattern of employment can be ascribed to the type of education given to women and it is also a reflection of the facilities made available for their education by the government that has always been male-dominated especially when it comes to decision-making.
In addition, one of the most formidable problems female employees have in Nigeria is their acceptability in their chosen professions due to the gender stereotype which brands some jobs as male jobs. Any female in such jobs is seen as one trying to close rank with or wanting to be equal to men. This results in some of the duties which they should undertake been taken away from them under the assumption that women are the weaker sex.
