Opeyemi Adetola OLADEJO
Lecturer II
college of Agriculture, Engineering and Science (COAES)
Agriculture Programme
Dr. (Mrs.) Oladejo, Opeyemi Adetola obtained her B. Agric. (Animal Science) and PhD. (Animal Science) degrees in the years 2008 and 2021 respectively from the Department of Animal Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and M.Sc. (Animal Science) in 2012 from Bowen University, Iwo. She started lecturing in Animal Science and Fisheries Management, Agriculture Programme, Bowen University, Iwo on October 1st, 2014.
With reference to her research, her PhD thesis titled “Analysis of genetic diversity of Nigerian locally-adapted chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) using major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-linked marker’’, focused on the use of biotechnology and bioinformatics tools in assessing and investigating the diversities and variabilities in four locally-adapted chicken genotypes namely; Noiler, FUNNAB Alpha, Yoruba and Fulani ecotype chickens. This research was carried out at the BecA-ILRI, International Livestock Research Institute, Nairobi, Kenya through the Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) fellowship programme
Opeyemi Oladejo is also a beneficiary of series of international fellowships and training workshops which include: Animal Quantitative Genetics and Genomics Training Workshop at ILRI, BecA Hub, Nairobi, Kenya in June, 2017; European Union ILINOVA Fellowship, Summer School on Livestock Genomics & Advanced breeding at Egerton University, Kenya in February, 2016; Netherlands Nuffic Fellowship, Wageningen University and Research, Centre for Development on Agriculture Nutrition linkages at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2015; and African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) Fellowship at International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Ethiopia campus in September, 2015.
Opeyemi joined Bowen University in 2010 as a Laboratory Technologist in the Department of Animal Science and Fisheries Management and later joined the academic cadre in 2014 and she is currently Lecturer II in the same Department. She teaches courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in general agriculture, agricultural animal production, animal breeding and genetics, biostatistics, animal biotechnology and bioinformatics. Mrs Oladejo has co-supervised and supervised ten (10) undergraduate student projects.
At present she has published in fourteen (14) conference proceedings, fourteen (14) articles in refereed journals and six (6) of her journal papers are under review. Mrs Oladejo is involved in administrative activities of the Department and the University and she is a member of various committees at Unit/Departmental and College levels. With reference to my research, my PhD thesis titled “Analysis of genetic diversity of Nigerian locally-adapted chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) using major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-linked marker’’, focused on the use of biotechnology and bioinformatics tools in assessing and investigating the diversities and variabilities in four locally-adapted chicken genotypes namely; Noiler, FUNNAB Alpha, Yoruba and Fulani ecotype chickens. This research was carried out at the BecA-ILRI, International Livestock Research Institute, Nairobi, Kenya through the Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) fellowship programme where I served as ABCF research fellow for three (3) months. The Programme was funded by the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF); the UK Department for International Development (DFID); and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The study identified novel haplotypes in the MHC region responsible for disease resistance, tolerance as well as adaptation of Nigeria chickens to the environment. The outputs of the research study have been published in high-impact scopus-indexed journal, presented in three conferences of different professional bodies; while others are currently undergoing review.
