Gbemi Henry ANO-EDWARD

Anatomic Pathology Programme

As an academic, tutoring and mentoring of medical students and resident doctors on the mechanism and manner of diseases, I have trained 9 sets of medical students and I do teach rotating resident doctors from family medicine during their posting to the department. Thus, setting them on the right path towards a glorious medical career. In addition, I have had to counsel some students on choice of a career in medicine. I have produced more 40 museum pots (which has not been done here before) and 79 teaching slides in the medical student laboratory, for both undergraduates and postgraduate candidates.

I am frequently involved in clinico-pathologic conference and seminars in the hospital. Thereby improving the knowledge on the management of certain disease which have not been managed in the hospital before. Diseases like lymphoma, breast cancer, melanoma and metastatic carcinoma and very rare ones is now diagnosed in our hospital. I have delivered lectures at ground rounds and seminar organized by the hospital. This has led to the enrichment of the knowledge of the clinicians on autopsy and the role of the pathologist in management of patients. Hence, treatment outcome for our clients have improved.The various publications that I have been involved with, which are slightly skewed towards female reproductive health pathology, has helped to place our hospital in the lime light as a referral centre. Results of patients emanating from the department of anatomic pathology have been standardized and they agree with international best practice and have improved service delivery. The on-going research for the detection of PVT1 protein in urine and blood samples for detection of prostate cancer in men, if completed successfully, will further enhance the name of this noble institution. world-wide. As a member of CaPTc I am involved in the formation of prostate cancer repository bank across eight centres in West Africa.

(ii) In Progress:

  • Histologic Review of appendiceal lesions in BUTH, 2012-2021
    This work commenced in the lab from November 2017, data collection on the number of appendiceal specimen sent and biodata of the patients is being extracted from the log book. This is to ensure that the sample size is adequate for statistical evaluation. Thereafter, ethical clearance will be sought and reported slides will be retrieved and re-examined. This study will help to reveal that cancer of the appendix and other malignant diseases of the appendix do occur in our environment. Thus, medical practitioners in our environment would be encouraged to send appendix removed from patients for histologic review, rather than throwing them away. Also surgeons would be encouraged to consider cancer of the appendix as a possible differential             
  •  Histologic Review of Cervical Cancers in BUTH, 2012-2021 
    This work commenced in the lab from December 2017, data collection on the number of cervical biopsy specimen sent and biodata of the patients is being extracted from the log book. This is to ensure that the sample size is adequate for statistical evaluation. Thereafter, ethical clearance will be sought and reported slides will be retrieved and re-examined. The report from this study will show the burden of cervical cancer in Ogbomoso and prove that cervical cancer is still on the rise in our environment. Thus, a proposal would then be written on increasing the screening for early lesions of cervical cancer in BUTH, Ogbomoso.         
  • A review of testicular tumour in BUTH 2016-2020. Data collection on the number of testicular biopsy received and reported in the lab has commenced since February 2021 and it is on-going. Ethical clearance would be sought and data subjected to statistical analysis
