Research
My major area of research is in the field of inorganic and organometallic chemistry, centered on design with synthesis from organic ligands to metal-organic or metal complexes, spectroscopic characterization, thermodynamics with kinetic studies, biological and biochemical applications. Our research has basically established more understanding of the chemistry and biological significance of isatin, n-benzyl isatin, their Schiff bases and complexes.
Spectroscopic Analysis, Biological Applications and Current Research
Despite the challenges of growing single x-ray suitable crystals of all our isatin derivatives and complexes, we have characterized ligands and complexes using spectroscopic techniques. Thus I am versatile with the use of spectroscopic techniques namely FTIR, UV-Visible, 1H and 13C-NMR, elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements, melting point determinations, molecular mass determinations and conductivity determinations for the deductions of new compounds. Such new compounds have been applied to kinetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and florescent studies. This research is ongoing and has enjoyed research grant from Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC, UK, 2015) with paper presentations both locally and internationally and collaborations both home and abroad. Currently, we are also exploring in-silico kinetic studies of these complexes.
Currently, my research/supervisory role (both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels) spans from synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and biological applications of new ligands and complexes with kinetic studies, to isolation and spectroscopic identification of pharmaceutically potent natural products from plant extracts coupled with in silico studies. This would serve as a predictive tool to medicinal applications.
My undergraduate supervision has also focused on mentoring many students to study the Biological Chemistry of African Black soap and its metal complexes. This indigenous research has led us to the development of a laboratory-controlled preparative method of the Black soap and the elucidation of its ability to act as a ligand to transition metal complexes. The in vitro antimicrobial effect of enhancing this indigenous soap with natural products and phytochemicals has also been studied through this mentor-mentee relationship. This work already has some recent published and part of it was presented at a scientific forum of the PAN African Chemistry Network congress (Ghana, 2017). In February, 2022, Bowen University released some funds to support this research. This fund has afforded us the preparations of more formulations with wound healing potentials (on-going work).
My research collaborations on kinetic studies and dye effluent waste water clean-up using natural products has also recently attracted the Bowen University grant (on-going research, 2023).
