A Professor of Nursing with specialization in community/public health nursing at the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Bowen University Iwo, Nigeria. Prof. Esan is currently the Dean of the Faculty. She earned a Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) degree from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, in 2008, a Master’s degree in Public Health at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 2014 and a Ph.D. degree at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, in 2021.
Prof. Esan is a Registered Nurse/Midwife and a Public Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. She is currently an active member of the Alpha Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She started her teaching career as a graduate assistant at Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, in 2012, where she rose to the post of an associate Professor through dedication and hard work before moving to Bowen University Iwo, where she is currently as a full professor and the pioneer Dean of Faculty of Nursing Science.
Prof. Esan has extensive research experience, as attested by her publication records. She has authored over 60 publications in reputable journals, with more than 35 of the articles published in Scopus-indexed journals. She is a public health nurse specialist with her research focus on cancer risk factors, prevention and screening; community midwifery; and public health nursing research. She has contributed valuable knowledge to the field of public health through article publication, conference paper presentation and capacity building. Prof. Esan is a seasoned researcher, an emerging young scholar, and an educationist. She has enjoyed international and local research grants/support. She currently won the global award of ‘emerging nurse researcher/scholar for Africa region’ by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Prof. Esan has supervised over 80 undergraduate research thesis/projects, three master student research projects, and currently supervising four Ph.D. students in Nursing.
Prof. Esan’s research activities include but are not limited to a multi-country survey on COVID-19 titled “Awareness and Preparedness of Healthcare Workers against the First Wave of COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Survey across 57 Countries”. She served as the national lead and collaborator for the project in Nigeria, and she coordinated the research activities of her team and the successful completion of data collection in Ekiti state. She has also participated in some national surveys, including the national survey conducted by the Institute of Public Health, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, titled “Baseline Assessment on Injection Safety and Health Care Waste Management in 16 States in Nigeria”, in which she served as a Research Assistant for one of the South-Eastern States. She also participated in the national tuberculosis survey on Knowledge and Attitude towards Tuberculosis in six states in Nigeria. On the project, she participated as a Research Assistant/Collaborator in conducting focused group discussions and key informant interviews for stakeholders and tuberculosis patients.
As a cancer researcher, Prof. Esan collaboratively conducted studies on environmental risk assessment of radon (a naturally occurring radioactive gas) in selected residential quarters of university campuses in Nigeria as part of cancer risk assessment and prevention. She has also been collaboratively investigating awareness and utilization of screening services for cervical cancer and breast cancer among women, to enhance early detection of the disease, thus improving cancer prognosis. Of interest to her is enhancing the quality of life of cancer patients and reducing cancer morbidity and mortality through risk prevention, early detection and screening. She has published/authored over 25 research publications/scholarly articles on cancer research.
Prof. Esan has continued to increase her skills from being a nurse, midwife, and public health nurse specialist to a capacity builder. She is a master trainer and facilitator for project c.u.r.e, where she is at the forefront of training traditional birth attendants and nurses at the grassroots level on “helping babies breathe” and “essential care for the newborn”. She has continued to make an impact in reducing neonatal morbidities and mortality in low-resource settings.
Prof. Esan has won several awards, which include but are not limited to the Emerging nurse researcher/scholar award; University of Ibadan Postgraduate Student Award for publishing in a reputable international journal in 2021; Afe Babalola University Founder and Chancellor Research Award for publication in Scopus-indexed journal in years 2020, 2021, 2022 respectively; Best Abstract Award in 2016; Carnegie Scholarship for Female Postgraduate Students in 2011. Additionally, she won the award of the Best Student in Clinical Practice and Nurse of the Year during her undergraduate degree program. She recently earned the Meticulous Award of Excellence, awarded by the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students Association (NUNSA), due to her continued commitment to research and academic excellence. She is currently the Dean/Senior Assistant Provost of Faculty of Nursing of her University. Prof. Esan continues to mentor young ones towards academic excellence, moral uprightness, and scientific paper writing.

Research
I’m a public health nurse specialist with a research focus on cancer risk factors, prevention, and screening; community midwifery; and public health nursing research.
I have supervised over 80 undergraduate research theses/projects, three master student research projects, and currently supervising four Ph.D. students in Nursing.
