A. INTRODUCTION
Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, Nigeria recognizes the importance of honouring individuals who have demonstrated exemplary achievements, made outstanding contributions, and rendered invaluable services that align with the core values and mission of our institution. Nominees for honorary degrees are expected to be exceptional individuals who have made a significant impact on scholarship, culture, faith, business and industry, art and society. To this end, the University Community is hereby requested to nominate suitably qualified candidates for the Award of Honorary Degree for November, 2025 Convocation Ceremonies.
B. CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERATION
Bowen University, Iwo Nigeria is hinged on Godliness, Excellence, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Social Responsibility as her core values, and so in choosing a nominee, one must bear in mind these values as sacrosanct. The procedure for the selection of honorary degree recipients should be in accordance with the law and statute of Bowen University.
According to “KEFFI DECLARATION” of 2012 from the communique of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU), an Honorary Degree award should normally be given to any professional who has made significant or ground breaking discoveries/accomplishments/invention/innovation etc to societal development in any field of human endeavour, i.e. Humanities, Science or Technology. The award of honorary degree should not be tied to wealth consideration or political alignment but rather, it should be based on leadership and service and the contribution of the recipients to socio-economic development of the society.
A Honorary Degree will not be conferred on any serving political office holder whether appointed or elected. To qualify for any of the honorary degrees, a nominee must have been identified as possessing some of the following capabilities:
- He or she must have been a successful entrepreneur who has contributed immensely to development of the University education in Nigeria especially Bowen University;
- He or she must have rendered life-long service to the University, body of Christ, the community, or the nation at large, etc;
- Nominee must have been a leading and reputable scholar;
- He or she must have made important discoveries/accomplishments/innovations etc.
- He or she must have been an inventor, an artist, a musician or a social activist of great repute.
C. METHOD OF APPLICATION
- Nomination and Selection Process
Initial nominations should contain a brief summary of the individual’s accomplishments and reasons for considering the individual for an honorary degree in line with the criteria. The initial nomination should include the following:
- An Application signed by the proposers with their names and College/Directorate/Unit/Sections of the University.
- A brief description (a page write-up) of the individual’s accomplishments, including contributions to society, culture, scholarship, science, or art.
- A brief biography of the person.
- Additional letters of awards (if applicable), from other recognized organization(s) or University.
- Two reference letters from distinguished personalities in the Church/ Society.
- Eligibility to Nomination
The following categories are eligible to nominate candidate for Honorary Degree:
- Visitor
- Chancellor
- Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council and all Council Members
- Senate Members
- All other members of staff of Bowen University

Proposers of the nominees are required to submit only softcopy of the application, Referee reports, and other documents to [email protected]
All applications must be forwarded to the email not later than six (6) weeks from the date of this advert.
