Bowen University holds 16th Convocation Ceremony

The Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, will on Saturday honour the Ebola heroine and physicians, late Stella Adadevoh, with a Doctor of Science in Public Health. 
The award was part of activities marking the 16th convocation ceremony of the university.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, disclosed this during a press conference heralding the convocation ceremony at the university campus.
He said the heroine deserves to be honoured for saving lives of many Nigerians by preventing Mr Sawyer, an American-Liberian lawyer, who collapsed upon arrival at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos in late July, 2014.
The VC said the woman surrendered her life for the ‘greater public good,’ saying Nigeria needs to celebrate her to encourage others who are willing to protect the country.
Also, a former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, will deliver lecture on ‘The Nation and University System’ at the 16th convocation ceremony.
Prof. Ogunwole who disclosed that about 60 students are graduating with first class position out of 1,014, boasted that the university has produced students that are making waves all over the world.
He lamented lack of funding in private universities, adding “despite this limiting factor, we are still able to compete favourably with public universities with all the support from their federal and state governments.”
Speaking on the quality of students produced by the university, Prof Ogunwole said the institution’s entrepreneurship is targeted at what can influence the world.
The VC also boasted of advancement in agricultural production, saying “the university can boast of a modern paddock, a modern poultry house that can accommodate 5,000 laying birds.”

Bowen University Alumni Assure Management of Support

Some ex-students of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State has commended the management of the institution for sustaining the growth of the ivory tower.

They also promised to assist the university, as well as current students, for them to achieve success in their studies.

The ex-students led by Mr. Oluwaseun Adesanya, made the disclosure during a visit to the university.

Adesanya said, “We all know the role alumni play in the development of an institution and we believe that, the alumni of Bowen from 15 years ago definitely have a role to play.

“We believe that we have something we can offer to those currently in school for them not to fall into the pit that we fell into back then.

“Again, we also believe that it is time for us to unite and come together as a body for the benefit of our members and also for the development of the university.

“The management of the institution through its leader has really transform the institution and it is time that we the alumni also join hands with the management to move the institution to a greater height. The process has already commenced and we have had a meeting with the Vice Chancellor where we discussed issues that bother on how to move the institution forward.”

Excitement as 5 Best Graduating Bowen University Nursing Students get Automatic Employment

There was excitement in the air at Bowen University, Iwo, on Thursday as the management of the university offered automatic employment to five of its best graduating nursing students.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Joshua Ogunwole, made the disclosure on Thursday at the 2nd Nursing Science induction and award ceremony for the 39 inductees.

Ogunwole said that the five students scored 70 per cent and above in their examinations, adding that the job offer was a way to further motivate them as well as other students of the institution to do better.

Those given automatic employment by the university are Abisola Betiku, the best graduating student; Abidat Adeagbo-Mustapha; Adedolapo Adekanbi; Joy Aladegbami and Damilola Erinfolami.

The VC, in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of the ceremony, said the university’s gesture was to retain its best because of its plan to start post-graduate programme soon.

He said that aside the employment, the university would give them scholarships for their Masters’ programme.

Ogunwole said, “We have given them automatic employment in order to retain them. A wise institution should do everything to retain its best. We want to start Masters’ programme and they will be among the first set of students.

“We will give them scholarships for Masters and encourage them to go for PhD. It’s is not easy to come by PhD in Nursing but that is what Bowen is aiming at.”

The Head, Department of Nursing, University of Ibadan, Prisca Adejumo, urged the inductees to be technologically literate, as that would help them to be their best in the 21st Century where they would operate.

Adejumo said, “You need to upscale your capacity and join others in finding solutions to the problems of the world. You can’t afford not to be combative. You need to collaborate with other professionals.

“You cannot afford to be satisfied with knowing how to operate microsoft word, you need more than that. Be technologically literate.”

BOWEN Varsity Honours Medical Student Who Won Osun Govt Independence Essay Competition

It was another celebration galore at Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, when the principal officers of the institution and academic staff led by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Joshua Ogunwole assembled to honour Master Victor Adeyemo, a 400L student at the College of Health Sciences of the institution, who won this year’s Osun State Annual Independence Essay Competition, organized for all tertiary institutions in the country, held recently. Master Victor Adeyemo, a 400L Medicine and Surgery, won a brand new Toyota car as the overall best applicant in the competition.

Speaking at the celebration ceremony held on Tuesday at the university’s Library, the Vice-Chancellor eulogised the organizers, Osun State Government, under the administration of governor Gboyega Oyetola for such an excellent promoting and educational extra-curriculum programme in the state-organized for students in the country.

According to him, it is a welcoming development in the history of education in Nigeria, as it will promote academic excellence among the youths, boost and build their capacity, as well as motivate them to become somebody in life. In this direction, he said the Osun State government is thus putting money into projects and programmes that would build the future of Nigerian youths especially in the areas of science and technology.

He said: ”Today, we are celebrating another student of ours, Victor Adeyemo, who has joined other brilliant undergraduates of the university to make the institution proud in the academic world outside the university system. In the last three years, we have been in the vanguard of promoting academic excellence in the extra curriculum academic activities on the campus. Many of our undergraduates have won several academic awards and grant-aid in the last three years. We are boast of experienced human personnel, teaching and research capacities to produce sound mind graduates that can influence their immediate environments positively. Bowen University is a great centre of excellence where leaders are being trained, leaders, who will be Godly and be willing to pursue excellence at all times. Public Speaking is a compulsory course for all our undergraduates.”

“ The university is empowering its new award winner, a sum of 150 thousand naira in recognition of his excellent performance in the just concluded national essay competition organized by Osun State government. The money is meant for his capacity building for subsequent competitions ahead of him, at local and international. Levels,”.

While responding, the awardee, Adeyemo attributed his success to God and the quality of education the university exposed its students to. He thanked the university for recognizing his achievement, as he also expressed appreciation for the cash award.

He said. The workforce and the leadership of Bowen University culminated by the 21st century educational, skill and developmental training we enjoy on the campus are attributable to students’ performance at any level. We can compete with our peers at the global level, even in health science education.

“I learnt that we were not less than 702 applicants that enrolled for the competition for the essay national competition based on a topic; Unveiling the security architecture and daunting challenges in all the geopolitical zones of Nigeria and proffer workable solutions towards a peaceful, sustainable and indivisible Nigeria. The competition was in three stages, but God saw me through. Bowen taught me to be vast in knowledge. Though I am a medical undergraduate, the university exposes me to know something about everything. This is another secret of Bowen students’ academic success.
